TJ Waste donates skip services to Solent Mind

TJ Waste has donated skip hire services to Mayfield Nurseries in Southampton, a garden centre whose plant sale proceeds go straight to Solent Mind, a Hampshire-based mental health charity.

Mayfield needed help with disposing of some waste that had been building up around the garden centre, things such as old furniture, plastic plant pots and mixed rotting wood.

They knew of TJ Waste and approached us to ask for help, a request that we were more than happy to agree to. We supplied them with three 12-yard skips free of charge and have given them the option to come back to us if they require more in the future.

In order to get the centre cleared, Mayfield put a plea out to local companies for people to volunteer to help fill the skips. Four companies responded to the plea, with 20 volunteers turning up on the dedicated day to help.  

Jo Silsbury of Solent MInd organised the clearance. She said: “The volunteers worked so hard all day, weeding and pruning the dementia garden, demolishing sheds and pergolas, clearing up the composting area, sorting the piles of wood, washing walls, emptying a greenhouse, moving several tons of compost bags, and mending walls and raised beds. The first skip was filled within 30 minutes! It was a huge effort but such a rewarding day and we have had such lovely feedback and lots of people asking to come back and help again which is fantastic.”

Mayfield Nurseries is a garden centre located in the old walled kitchen garden at Mayfield Park, Southampton. As well as the garden centre selling a wide variety of plants, they also have a garden shop which stocks gardening tools and accessories, and the Mayfield Cafe which is open for drinks and snacks between 10.30am and 3.30pm 7 days a week.

All Mayfield’s plant sale profits go to Solent Mind, who work in collaboration with the national charity, Mind. Solent Mind works to ensure that anyone in our community experiencing a mental health issue has somewhere to turn to for advice, information and support.
