TJ undertakes waste management for the Great South Run for the 9th year

TJ Waste will be undertaking waste management services for the Great South Run 2023, which is taking place this weekend (14 and 15 October) in Portsmouth. This is the ninth year that TJ has been awarded this contract, which is a testament to the exceptional service we provide.

The Great South Run is one of the world’s leading 10-mile runs, with over 20,000 runners enjoying the route around Southsea and southern Portsmouth, and raising millions of pounds for charity. It is described as a fast and flat route with breathtaking sea views, and the incredible local support, rocking on-course music zones and post-race celebrations create an unbeatable atmosphere from start to finish.

TJ is supplying 32 1,100L wheelie bins and three 17-yard Roll-On-Roll-Off (RORO) containers for the event. The bins will be delivered on the Friday so that they’re in place before the start of the Saturday races. The ROROs will follow on Saturday morning.

TJ operatives will be on-site early Sunday morning to empty all the bins and to ensure everything is as it should be prior to the main event commencing. The bins will be emptied into two REL bin lorries which will also be on-site.

Working alongside Colas, TJ will position the bins and skips at points throughout the course and at Clarence Esplanade, where the 10-mile run starts and finishes. From there, the course takes the runners west along the seafront, through various parts of Old Portsmouth and Portsea, before returning to Southsea and up to Eastney with the final stretch along the seafront back to the finish line by the Pyramids.

Three shorter runs will take place on the Saturday. These are the 5k run, 2.5k junior run for 9-15 year-olds and a 1.5k mini run for 3-8 year-olds. The kids races are great for building up children’s enthusiasm for running and they even had the option to run in fancy dress if they wished, with prizes awarded for the best costumes.

Many of the participants run for charity, whereby they sign up to raise money for their charity of choice and that charity gifts them their place in the run. This year’s partner charities include: Mind, Cancer Research UK, British Heart Foundation, Guide Dogs, Alzheimer’s Society, Breast Cancer Now, Stroke Association, Macmillan Cancer Support, The Christie Charity, Blood Cancer UK and Prostate Cancer UK.

After the weekend’s events are complete, all the waste will be taken back to TJ’s Materials Recovery Facility in Tipner for sorting, with all recyclables being extracted and sent on to the appropriate recycling facilities. We are dedicated to diverting as much waste as possible from landfill and process all waste in line with WRAP protocol.

We have four Materials Recovery Facilities dotted along the south coast at Southampton, Portsmouth and Yapton, and we endeavour to reuse or recycle as much of the waste we handle as possible. We use recycling partners in and around Hampshire to ensure the different recyclables are directed down the best possible routes, and we also direct some materials towards Energy from Waste as appropriate.

TJ Waste General Manager Luke Haskell said: “This is the 9th Great South Run that we’ve provided waste management services for and we’re thrilled to be involved again. As one of the leading running events in the south, we’re keen to nurture this partnership and dedicated to ensuring yet another year of exceptional service.”
