TJ TAKES CARE OF WASTE MANAGEMENT AT OXFAM’S TRAILWALKER EVENT FOR THIRD YEAR

TJ Waste provided the waste management service for the Trailwalker event, which took place on 24-26 September to raise money for Oxfam and The Gurkha Welfare Trust.

The challenge is to walk, jog or run 100km non-stop across the South Downs in under 30 hours in a team of four. Each team can have two support crew members to help you get to the finish line.

This is the third year that TJ has provided the waste management solution for this event and every aspect of it was once again, successfully undertaken. The challenge starts at Queen Elizabeth Country Park (QECP) and finishes at Brighton Racecourse. TJ supplied 12 skips at various checkpoints across the route to give the support crews somewhere to put the waste generated throughout the trek and ensure it is disposed of correctly.

At the end of the event, TJ removed the skips and took them back to their Materials Recovery Facility in Portsmouth for sorting to ensure as much of the waste as possible was recycled or reused. All recyclable materials were directed down the most appropriate routes to ensure complete efficiency.

The outstanding Queen’s Gurkha Signals – a regular unit of Royal Corps of Signals, one of the combat support arms of the British Army – oversee the event logistics. They ensure all participants make it safely across the course, with support and encouragement offered by Oxfam and The Gurkha Welfare Trust volunteers en-route.

Exercise Trailwalker started out as a military training exercise in Hong Kong in 1981. In 1986, Trailwalker was opened to civilian participation for the first time, and now, following the move of the Queen’s Gurkha Signals to the UK, the 100k event takes place across the South Downs.

The teams arrived at QECP on Friday 24th for registration, dinner and a welcome and safety briefing from the Queen’s Gurkha Signals, Oxfam and The Gurkha Welfare Trust.

The trek began on Saturday morning, with rolling start times between 6am and 9am. The event continued overnight Saturday, with completion on Sunday. After crossing the finish line, all participants were awarded medals and offered curry served by the Gurkhas.

Each team must raise a minimum of £1400 to take part and all the money raised will go to Oxfam and the Gurkha Welfare Trust.

Oxfam are the world’s leading experts in providing clean water in emergency situations. They supply, deliver, build and maintain lifesaving drinking water supplies and toilets for thousands of people in hard to reach places. They also provide support and aid to people in many impoverished environments and situations including families caught up in the global refugee crisis, communities facing starvation because of drought and those needing to rebuild their lives after conflict and disaster.

The Gurkhas are soldiers from Nepal who are recruited into the British Army and have been for over 200 years. They are renowned for their loyalty, professionalism and bravery. The Gurhka Welfare Trust ensures that Gurkha veterans, their widows and their wider communities are able to live with dignity in their home-country of Nepal. They do this through financial, medical and community aid.
