TJ coordinates safe removal of gas canister from Worthing Beach

TJ Waste coordinated the safe removal of a gas canister from a West Sussex beach recently. The unknown object was exposed below the tide line on 13 February, causing concern to locals and authorities alike.

HM Coastguard was alerted to a suspected ordnance and a 100m cordon was put in place as Royal Navy bomb disposal experts attended the scene. A spokesperson for Adur & Worthing Councils said the discovery led to “a couple of concerning days on Worthing Beach”.

The object was thoroughly assessed and identified as “posing no threat” to the public.

At TJ Waste, we have an existing relationship with Adur & Worthing Councils as we assisted them with refuse collections a few years ago during bin driver strikes. The council reached out to us for assistance in coordinating the removal and disposal of the item, which we were more than happy to help with.

Utilising our network or trusted specialists, we organised for the canister to be removed from the beach quickly, with the item being safely transported to a specialist facility. There it was cleaned and confirmed to be a historic gas canister.

The council thanked HM Coastguard and the Royal Navy’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit for their quick responses.

TJ Waste specialises in hazardous waste management and we employ a range of removal and disposal methods for various waste types including Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE), asbestos, contaminated soil, offensive waste and hazardous liquids.
