TJ Waste have won the waste management contract for the Great South Run 2019, which will take place on Sunday 20 October in Portsmouth. This is the sixth consecutive year that TJ has won this sought-after contract.
Now in its 30th year, the Simplyhealth Great South Run is one of the world’s leading 10-mile runs and this year will see over 20,000 runners enjoying exciting new on-course experiences to mark the 30th staging of the event.
TJ will supply a number of wheelie bins as well as three 17-yard roll-on-roll-off skips. Working alongside Colas, TJ will position the skips at points throughout the course and the wheelie bins at Clarence Esplanade, where the 10-mile run starts and finishes. From there, the course takes the runners through Old Portsmouth and the Historic Dockyard with the halfway point at Winston Churchill Avenue and back towards Southsea Common, where the final two miles take place on the scenic seafront.
TJ will supply a dustcart (and two operatives) which will initially remain on the common emptying the wheelie bins as they fill. From mid afternoon the cart will follow Colas around the course, collecting waste as the race proceeds. After the weekend’s events are complete, all the waste will be taken back to TJ’s Materials Recovery Facility in Tipner, where it will be thoroughly sorted and any recyclables extracted and sent on to recycling facilities.
TJ will deliver the bins and skips to the site on Saturday and get them in the correct locations in advance to ensure efficiency. Sunday’s event will kick off from 7am, with the first wave of runners starting at 10.15am and the last wave setting off at 11.17am.
Many people run for charity, which means they sign up to raise money for their charity of choice and that charity gifts them their place in the run. Diabetes UK are the official charity partner of the 2019 run, with others involved including Cancer Research UK, the Bobby Moore Fund, Alzheimer’s Society, British Heart Foundation, Macmillan Cancer Support, Mind, NSPCC, the Stroke Association and the Ellen MacArther Cancer Trust.
Prior to the main event on the Sunday, four shorter runs will be held on Saturday. These are the 5k run, 2.5k junior run for 9-15 year olds, 1.5k mini run for 3-8 year olds and 2.5k canine run for owners and their dogs. The kids races are great for building up childrens’ enthusiasm for running and there is optional nautical-themed fancy dress for the youngsters. Please note that runners in the canine race may only take one dog each.

“We’re pleased to be involved in this event again this year. It is such a popular event and as it grows, so does the waste requirements and our part in it. It’s nice that the Great South Run has become a constant in our events planning each year and I hope the good relationship continues to grow as we strive to continually deliver exceptional service.”
