TJ awarded SCC commercial waste contract extension

Southampton City Council (SCC) has extended their commercial waste disposal services contract with TJ Waste, following a successful initial three-year partnership.

We’ve been providing SCC with commercial waste disposal services since 2020, when we secured a three-year contract worth £7.2m. This contract extension will see the commercial services arm of SCC, which provides waste management services to local businesses, continue to dispose of waste at our state-of-the-art Dibles Wharf Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) in central Southampton.

SCC is responsible for collecting up to 20,000 tonnes of waste annually from businesses in and around Southampton and this will continue to be taken to Dibles Wharf for disposal, which encompasses recycling and generation of energy from waste.

TJ secured the initial contract after being selected through a competitive tendering process which scored bidders on environmental performance, contract management, corporate-social responsibility and cost.

We have four MRFs dotted along the south coast at Southampton, Portsmouth and Yapton, which is where all the waste we handle is processed. We’re dedicated to diverting waste from landfill and endeavour to reuse or recycle up to 100% of the waste that comes through our doors.

In 2022, we processed over 115,500 tonnes of waste across our MRFs. We provide waste collection and management services to 3,000 organisations across Southern England as well as extensive third party tipping services.

We process all materials in line with WRAP (Waste and Resources Action Programme) protocol. WRAP’s mission is to accelerate the move to a sustainable, resource-efficient economy by re-inventing how we design, produce and sell products, re-thinking how we use and consume products, and re-defining what is possible through reuse and recycling.

Luke Haskell, TJ Waste’s General Manager said: “We’re proud of the strong partnership we’ve built with SCC over the past three years and we look forward to building on it further in the future. We work hard to maintain the professional and efficient service the council has come to expect from us; it’s this approach that ensures their commercial waste operations run as smoothly as possible. This contract continues to be part of our vision to help create a cleaner, greener city for SCC.”
