Supporting Reserves Day 2024

TJ Waste is supporting Reserves Day 2024, which is taking place on Wednesday 26 June. The day, which is organised by the Ministry of Defence (MoD), is the chance to raise awareness of the Reserves and for people to show their support for the Reserve Forces and all they do.

Reservists give up their spare time to serve in the Reserve Forces, balancing their civilian life with a military career to ensure that should their country require them, they would be ready to serve as part of the military.

Reserves Day, which is part of the wider Armed Forces Week, was created to highlight and recognise the valuable contribution Reservists make to our Armed Forces.

TJ is a strong supporter of the Armed Forces, Veterans and Reserves and truly values all they do for our country. TJ sponsored Worthing’s Armed Forces Day last year, donating waste management services to the event free of charge.

Earlier this year, we sponsored TJ Driver and Army Veteran Andy Weir, who undertook the 3 Peak Challenge to raise money for AMBUSH Veteran Adventures, a Community Interest Company that provides adventurous and woodland management training to serving and veteran personnel of the British armed forces and blue light services.

Andy completed this gruelling challenge – which involves climbing the three highest peaks in the UK: Ben Nevis in Scotland (1,344m), Scafell Pike in England (978m) and Snowdon in Wales (1.085m) – in 23 hours 50 minutes, such an achievement!

In 2021, TJ signed the Armed Forces Covenant, demonstrating our commitment to supporting Armed Forces personnel, reservists, veterans and their families, and aligning our values with those of the covenant.

The Armed Forces Covenant outlines how the Government, businesses and communities support Armed Forces personnel past and present throughout the year.

Agreeing to the terms of the covenant means that we actively encourage applications from veterans and reservists in a bid to provide job opportunities to this valued community as well as increase and enhance our employment pool.

We’re keen to employ ex-service personnel and support them in the transition from the Armed Forces to civilian life. To do this, we supply additional assistance when needed, including support with wellbeing and by providing training as required.

For many, the change in pace after leaving the services will feel like a big change, but we’re happy to help veterans adjust to this to ensure they settle into their new role well.

This support extends to veteran’s families as well as active reservists. Anyone successfully securing a role at TJ who is part of the reserve forces will be allowed time off to undertake any related duties, and flexibility at other times to ensure the two roles work well together.

TJ Waste Commercial Director Luke Haskell said: “We signed the covenant to demonstrate our support for veterans and reservists in our area and to encourage them to apply for jobs with us as we highly value what they do and the skills they’d bring to the table. This sponsorship allows us to give a little something extra back to the Armed Forces Community and provide further support, which we’re very pleased to do.”
