TJ Waste has won the contract to provide waste management services for the Portsmouth International Kite Festival on 29th and 30th July. We’ve been providing this vital service for around ten years, which helps to ensure that the festival site remains clean and tidy year on year.
The event, which will take place on Southsea Common, is now in its 31st year and continues to be popular with locals and kite flyers from all over the UK and the world! The Kite Festival is free of charge and jointly organised by Portsmouth City Council and The Kite Society of Great Britain. Kite fliers from all over the world are keen to attend as it is recognised as one of the best and most popular Kite Festivals in the world.
Southsea Common is the ideal location as it overlooks the Solent and offers wide open spaces and good winds which allow kite fliers to show off their creations at their best. The theme for 2023 is “East meets West” and this will provide the opportunity for many expert fliers to showcase their East-themed kites.
We’re supplying seven eurobins and a large roll-on-roll-off (RORO) skip for the event for Colas, the City’s street cleansing and highways contractor. These will be delivered to the site the day before so that they can be positioned in the optimal places prior to the event.
We will collect the bins on the Monday, transporting all the waste back to our Materials Recovery Facility at Tipner for sorting. We’re dedicated to diverting waste from landfill and we endeavour to recycle up to 100% of the waste we handle.
We have established recycling routes for a wide range of materials from the standard card, paper, metal and plastic bottles, to the more tricky materials such as rubble, hard plastics and mattresses. We’re always working behind the scenes to find new ways to recycle the materials that have proved difficult in the past. Any materials that cannot be reused or recycled are directed down the Energy from Waste (EfW) path wherever possible.
We process all materials in line with WRAP (Waste and Resources Action Programme) protocol. WRAP’s mission is to accelerate the move to a sustainable, resource-efficient economy by re-inventing how we design, produce and sell products, re-thinking how we use and consume products, and re-defining what is possible through reuse and recycling.
The provision of eurobins and RORO for this event falls under our Event Waste Management service, which can be tailored to suit the needs of your event, whatever they may be. We offer a range of services from eurobin and skip hire, to the provision of staff provision for litter picking and emptying bins during the event, as well as post-event clean up.
