TJ’s Tipner Materials Recovery Facility was the chosen location for a Fire Service hazardous waste extraction and removal training exercise, which took place on 26 October.
The training, which consisted of a two-hour session at TJ’s Pound Yard facility on Twyford Avenue, Portsmouth, involved five fire crews taking part in a ‘real life’ scenario.
The five crews came from Cosham and Southsea fire stations and comprised over 20 participants. The training was delivered and observed by senior fire officers who witnessed the processes and procedures and debriefed the fire crews upon completion of the training.
The training took place at our skip stock area at our Tipner Materials Recovery Facility to simulate a real life scenario. The scenario consisted of an unidentified hazardous waste container that had a leak, a casualty next to the container and another walking casualty that could potentially have experienced exposure to the hazardous waste.
The crews were asked to safely assess and treat the casualties that had been affected by the dangerous chemicals, before committing a team in breathing apparatus and wearing Hazmat suits into the contaminated area to stem the leaking container and make the scene safe.
TJ Site Manager Jason Strudwick, General Manager Luke Haskell and Marketing Assistant Emily Martin were present on the day to observe. Emily said:
“It was a pleasure to host the Hampshire Fire Crews from Cosham and Southsea in October. Our large skip holding yard at our Tipner site provided the perfect area for the crews to simulate a real-life emergency and it enabled the trainees to fully immerse themselves in the operations. It was also interesting for our site teams to see how an emergency such as the one demonstrated would be dealt with.”
Station Manager Stu Vince said:
“This is a fantastic venue for our crews to test out their hazardous material response procedures and skills. The realistic training that a setting like this provides is hugely beneficial to the team. Thank you to TJ Waste who we worked closely with to arrange today’s scenario and allowed us to use their site.”
