Our guide to construction waste disposal

At TJ Waste we specialise in all types of waste disposal, with the construction industry being one of the sectors we deal with often. We have a reputation for excellence and our extensive knowledge of the waste industry has allowed us to perfect our services to suit the needs of our clients as well as directing waste down the most appropriate routes.

Construction waste usually comes in vast amounts so it’s important to get the disposal methods and routes right from the get-go. From digging foundations to demolition, there are a range of different waste types to consider:

Rubble and asphalt
Rubble (concrete, bricks, paving slabs and stone) and asphalt are some of the most common types of construction waste, so if you have these materials to dispose of, we’d like you to know that we’ll reuse them to produce a range of recycled aggregates. This is not only a good use of these materials, but it’s also beneficial for the environment as it stops them from going to landfill.

Plasterboard
Plasterboard must be disposed of correctly to ensure there are no ill effects. Plasterboard contains gypsum, a soft sulfate mineral composed of calcium sulfate dihydrate, so if plasterboard is disposed alongside biodegradable wastes it can lead to the production of odorous and toxic hydrogen sulphide gas. The current plasterboard waste management regulations state that plasterboard has to be disposed of separately to prevent this.

Plasterboard should be recycled wherever possible. The gypsum can be removed to enable the remaining parts to be separated and recycled back into raw materials for reuse. Recycling is important and advantageous because it reduces the amount of waste going to landfill and produces a useful resalable product.

Asbestos
If you’re working on a project where asbestos is present, you might like to know that TJ is licensed to carry hazardous materials such as asbestos. We can provide secure skips and eurobins for you to deposit asbestos into (we cannot directly remove or handle asbestos, you will need a licenced removalist for that task). We will then collect the full skip or bin from your site and transport it to a third party’s premises, where it will be safely disposed of.

SITE WASTE MANAGEMENT PLANS

Larger construction projects must adhere to stricter regulations on their construction and demolition waste and may require a Site Waste Management Plan. It is your responsibility to only pass your waste on to an authorised carrier, which is where TJ comes in.

We specialise in commercial waste management, including assisting with Site Waste Management Plans and we can tailor a service to suit your business’ exact needs to ensure everything is taken care of. Please get in touch for some guidance or to find out more.

HOW WE CAN HELP

Grab hire

Grab hire is a great option for construction waste as our 8-wheel grab lorries are ideal for moving large volumes of heavy waste in one go. They’re also good if you don’t know exactly how much waste you’ll generate – they can take up to 16 tonnes per load and do additional runs if needed.

With TJ, it’s quick and easy to arrange, so you could have your waste removed as quickly as the next working day and our lorries can be on and off-site in less than 30 minutes! Common waste streams for grab hire include hardcore, rubble, asphalt and soil.

Skip hire

TJ offers a range of skip hire options, from 2-yard mini skips up to 12-yard jumbo skips, as well as 17 and 35-yard commercial containers, so you can rest assured that there’s one to suit every project. Discover the dimensions of each skip and guidance on how much waste they’ll hold on the individual skip pages.

You can book a skip to be delivered as quickly as the next working day (subject to availability). Our standard skip hire period is up to 14 days, but your skip can also be exchanged – full for empty – giving you a constant waste disposal option on-site should you need it. We can also supply secure plasterboard-only or asbestos-only skips for completely safe disposal should you need them – get in touch for a quote.

Hazardous waste disposal

As a responsible waste management company, we go above and beyond to ensure that all hazardous waste is handled, transported and disposed of in the correct manner to ensure safety and avoid any detrimental environmental impact.

We work with a number of partners to ensure that each type of waste is directed down the correct routes for safe end disposal. We can assist you with the following waste streams: WEEE, asbestos, contaminated soil, offensive waste and hazardous liquids – please get in touch to find out more.

Third party tipping

Commercial customers can utilise our tipping service at our three state-of-the-art Materials Recovery Facilities located at Portsmouth, Southampton and Yapton. We charge by weight (tonne) with a  ½ tonne minimum, and our facilities are equipped with bespoke plant and software, allowing us to divert waste from landfill, avoiding the expensive tax associated with it and saving you money.

Your safety is a top priority, so to tip with us, you’ll be required to wear full PPE; hard hat, hi-vis and safety boots. Please be aware that tipping on a commercial basis will require a waste carrier’s licence. Read our Guide to Tipping to find out more…

Free rubble disposal

Construction companies, contractors and those in the building industry are invited to dispose of their rubble with us, free of charge! You can drop your unwanted hardcore/rubble off at our Butser Quarry, which is located on the A3 at Petersfield, GU31 5SP. We’re open 8am – 5pm Monday to Friday.

Many places charge per bag to dispose of this type of waste, so this could be a great solution for your business. To unload, you simply need to hold a waste carrier’s licence and be wearing a hard hat, hi-vis top and steel toed boots to ensure your safety.

We will crush the hardcore and use it to make several recycled aggregates that we produce in-house, including iBlend®.

Sweeper hire

Our comprehensive road sweeper service is available in the Hampshire and West Sussex areas and ideal for keeping the areas surrounding construction sites clean and clear of muck. We have three 18-tonne sweeper lorries, all of which have an array of safety features including 360 camera systems, high-visibility signage and beacons, and audible left turn signals.

The service is extremely versatile as it is available at an hourly or daily rate, meaning you can hire them to suit your exact requirements, without paying for more than you need. We’re very reliable; our skilled and experienced drivers will arrive at the arranged place on the requested date and time and undertake cleansing of the area, ensuring everything is spic and span.
