TJ wins 3-year Gosport Community Skip Scheme contract

TJ Waste has secured a three-year contract to continue delivering the operational waste management requirements for Gosport’s Community Skip Scheme.

TJ, who has been delivering this service for the past 18 months since the scheme’s launch, has won the initial three-year contract, with a view to extend for a further two years.

This news comes hot on the heels of the announcement that the scheme has now collected 500 tonnes of waste from the borough’s residents, demonstrating its success in making waste disposal more accessible, and ultimately, keeping local communities cleaner.

The scheme brings skips to seven community locations, enabling residents to dispose of their bulky waste easily, responsibly and free of charge. The scheme is managed by Gosport Borough Council, who organise these community events on alternate Saturdays throughout the borough.

Council Leader Cllr Peter Chegwyn said: “The scheme has been a real success since launching in 2023, with thousands of visits from our residents and over 350 skips filled.”

Skips are placed in key locations around Gosport, with residents being invited to bring along their household waste and unwanted items for disposal. Skips will be available from 9.30am to 11.30am, but may end earlier if all skips are full. Upcoming events include:

  • Saturday 18 January – Whites Place Car Park
  • Saturday 1 February – Walpole Park Car Park South
  • Saturday 15 February – Privett Park
  • Saturday 1 March – Green Lane, Hardway Car Park
  • Saturday 15 March – Bridgemary School Car Park
  • Saturday 29 March – Alver Valley West Car Park
  • Saturday 12 April – Gosport Leisure Centre
  • Saturday 26 April – Whites Place Car Park

The events are subcontracted to us in their entirety meaning that we supply the skips, the vehicles, our staff to man the events and our insurance to cover them. This all-in-one service is just one of the many versatile service options that fall under our comprehensive waste management services offering.

We supply the skips utilising our vast stock, which are ideal for this type of disposal. Our fleet of skip lorries and accompanying drivers deliver a number of skips to the event location the day before and collect and remove them as they become full. We then organise for more skips to be delivered as and when needed depending on demand.

A number of TJ staff work at each event, managing people/car traffic to ensure the day runs smoothly and supporting the correct use of each skip (assisting with direction/guidance).

Peter added: “Our community skips are extremely popular, in fact more than 500 tonnes of household waste has been collected since the scheme began, all without charge to our residents. TJ Waste is a local company and we’re very pleased to continue working with them to provide this service for Gosport residents.”

TJ Waste’s Commercial Director, Luke Haskell said: “We’re thrilled to have secured this contract! We’ve been working with the council on this initiative for the past 18 months and it’s been a great experience. The difference it is making to the local community is evident, and the take-up and enthusiasm of the local residents has been fantastic to see. More waste is being disposed of correctly and responsibly, making it win-win all round.”

All the waste collected is transported to our Portsmouth Materials Recovery Facility for sorting, segregating and onward recycling. We’re dedicated to diverting as much waste as possible from landfill and endeavour to recycle up to 100% of the waste we handle.

Many different waste types are welcomed at these events, including a number of traditionally tricky items to dispose of such as POPs (unwanted sofas, armchairs and upholstered furniture), mattresses, WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) and rubble.
