Supporting Southampton residents with Christmas waste disposal

TJ Waste is providing skip hire services free of charge to Southampton City Council (SCC) this Christmas to make waste disposal for residents living in large blocks of flats convenient and hassle-free.

It can often prove tricky to accommodate additional waste when you live in a flat, so having the option to utilise a skip over the festive period will give residents a little peace of mind and perhaps save them a trip to the tip!

TJ is donating four 6-yard skips, one to each of the following locations:

  • Meredith Towers, Tunstall Road, SO19 6NX
  • High Town Towers, Warburton Road SO19 6HG
  • Dumbleton Towers, Warburton Road SO19 6NS
  • Albion Towers, Golden Grove SO14 1JA

The skips will be on-site from the 24th to 27th December for residents to utilise, though we do ask that these are not overfilled and that all waste is placed inside the skip, and not around it.

We will collect the skips on the 27th December and take them to our Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) at Dibles Wharf, Southampton, for sorting, segregating and onward recycling. We are dedicated to diverting as much waste as possible from landfill and endeavour to recycle up to 100% of the waste that we handle.

We process all waste in line with WRAP (Waste and Resources Action Programme) protocol. WRAP’s mission is to accelerate the move to a sustainable, resource-efficient economy by re-inventing how we design, produce and sell products, re-thinking how we use and consume products, and re-defining what is possible through reuse and recycling.

We’ve been working in partnership with SCC since 2020, when we secured an initial three-year contract worth £7.2m, followed by a contract extension last year. SCC is responsible for collecting up to 20,000 tonnes of waste annually from businesses in and around Southampton and the extension meant that the commercial services arm of SCC, which provides waste management services to local businesses, has continued to dispose of waste at our Dibles Wharf MRF, which encompasses recycling and generation of energy from waste.

TJ Waste General Manager Luke Haskell said: “We’re pleased to be providing support to both the Council and the residents in these areas. Additional waste is always generated at Christmas and providing these skips should make the festive period a little easier for residents. It will also allow us to ensure that this waste is properly sorted and separated to ensure higher levels of recycling.”
