TJ provides assistance following floods

TJ Waste was called in to provide waste management assistance after an area in Gosport flooded recently, resulting in widespread damage to residents’ homes and furnishings.

When the Council received reports from residents that much of their flooring, furniture and personal belongings had suffered extreme water damage in the floods, they decided to provide skips to enable residents to dispose of their damaged goods with ease.

TJ supplied 15 skips to Village Road car park in Alverstoke – which is within the area affected by the floods – to enable people to dispose of their spoilt furniture and carpets etc.

The flooding, which was caused by high tides, left many people homeless in the immediate aftermath, with 50 homes having to be evacuated by firefighters.

The 15 8-yard and 12-yard skips were delivered soon after the disaster to help get the clear-up operation underway quickly, so that the residents could start putting their homes back together.

As skips became full, TJ whisked them away to their Tipner Materials Recovery Facility for sorting and onward recycling. TJ has a range of partnerships with a range of recycling facilities both in Hampshire and further afield, which allow us to direct materials down the most appropriate route for their type.

We are dedicated to diverting as much waste as possible from landfill and we endeavour to recycle up to 100% of the waste that we handle. Where reuse or recycling is not possible, we explore other options such as biomass for wood and Energy from Waste (EfW).

We process all waste in line with WRAP (Waste and Resources Action Programme) protocol. WRAP’s mission is to accelerate the move to a sustainable, resource-efficient economy by re-inventing how we design, produce and sell products, re-thinking how we use and consume products, and re-defining what is possible through reuse and recycling.

We have four Materials Recovery Facilities dotted along the south coast at Southampton, Portsmouth and Yapton, so we take our waste back to the nearest facility available to us to keep carbon emissions to a minimum.

TJ Waste Commercial Director Luke Haskell said: “We were delighted to provide this solution at such a stressful time for those involved. Giving them the ability to dispose of their damaged items quickly meant that they were able to get on with the clean up and restoration process without worrying about organising the waste removal themselves. We’re always happy to assist in these situations and able to respond quickly and flexibly.”
