TJ completes waste management contract for Let’s Rock Southampton

TJ Waste successfully carried out the waste management for Let’s Rock Southampton, which took place on 14 August on Southampton Common.

This is the second year that TJ has provided the waste management services for the festival, which has an 80s rock theme. Let’s Rock Southampton has been running for four years, bringing music fans on the south coast the very best of the 80s! Let’s Rock festivals have been running in other locations all over the UK since 2009.

The festival kicked off at midday and finished at 10.30pm with standard and VIP tickets on offer. The VIP option provided festival goers with additional luxuries such as fast track entry, access to a comfy seating area, posh loos and a meal and welcome drink.

TJ provided 20 Eurobins on-site as well as two 35-yard, roll-on-roll-off skips. The bins were dotted around the common to ensure it was kept as clean as possible throughout the event. A team of TJ staff were on duty throughout the day to coordinate the regular emptying of the bins into the skips.

The skips were then removed the following day and taken back to TJ’s Materials Recovery Facility, Dibles Wharf in Southampton, where the waste was sorted to ensure all recyclable items were separated and that the rest of the waste was directed down the most appropriate routes.

TJ delivered the bins and skips to the site the day before the festival to ensure the bins were in the optimum locations and that the skips were out of the way but still accessible for the TJ team.

TJ are dedicated to diverting waste from landfill and endeavour to recycle up to 100% of the waste they handle. They have established recycling routes for a wide range of materials from the standard card, paper, metal and plastic bottles, to the more tricky materials such as rubble, hard plastics and mattresses. TJ are always working behind the scenes to find new ways to recycle the materials that have proved difficult in the past. Any materials that cannot be reused or recycled are directed down the Energy from Waste (EfW) path wherever possible.

TJ processes all materials in line with WRAP (Waste and Resources Action Programme) protocol. WRAP’s mission is to accelerate the move to a sustainable, resource-efficient economy by re-inventing how we design, produce and sell products, re-thinking how we use and consume products, and re-defining what is possible through reuse and recycling.

TJ Waste’s General Manager Luke Haskell said:
