TJ Drivers Show True Grit! Please call us with your enquiry - 01329 226450

Drivers at the TJ Group have been playing their part in keeping Hampshire moving during the coldest winter in four decades.  They helped with the urgent deliveries to one of the UK's leading highways contractors, Colas, replenishing rock salt supplies at depots in Southampton and Portsmouth amid heavy demand.

The commodity, now reportedly in short supply across Britain as temperatures plunge to -18oC in places and barely rise above freezing during the day - is used by Hampshire County Council's gritting lorries in order to keep roads open.

TJ Transport's crews, working shifts, clocked up nearly 4,000 miles in 48 hours as they made 8 round trips between a salt mine in Cheshire - one of only two in operation in the country and dating back to Roman times - and the South Coast.

John Gosling, a TJ Director, said: "The lads did a sterling job in servicing the request from Colas, one of our 3,000 clients, which has local depots at Woolston in Southampton and Farlington in Portsmouth and is a contractor to the county council.

"We already do work with Colas through a 20-year contract, of which we are four years in, and we were more than happy to go the extra mile for them during what is regarded as the coldest winter spell since the early 1980's."

TJ Transport has since suspended fleet operations due to increasingly adverse weather conditions, with work scheduled to resume as normal on Monday, January 11th.

Mr Gosling said: "Many roads are treacherous with ice, and the safety of our workforce is paramount.  Our customers, many of whom are also affected by the Big Freeze, are in full agreement with this sensible course of action."
