The golf may not have been quite up to the standard of the recent Open championship but it did help raise thousands of pounds for charity.

Up to 100 players took to the course at Cams Hall Estate in Fareham in aid of the Portsmouth-based Beneficial Foundation

After 18 holes, a gala dinner was held at the Victory Lounge at Fratton Park which saw even more money flow in.

Organised by T J Waste and Recycling, the annual event raised more than £10,000 for the foundation, which provides education and training for people in need, particularly those suffering from learning difficulties and disabilities.

John Gosling, director of the company, said: 'When we started as a company we were getting calls all the time from charities asking us to donate this or that, so we decided to do something ourselves.

'We wanted to do something for a local charity, and I know it sounds corny but we wanted to put something back into the community.

'We get all our clients and suppliers involved, and we had 96 playing this year, and 220 at the dinner in the evening.

'In the three years we've been doing this we've doubled the number of players, so we're really pleased with the way it has taken off – it's getting better every year.

'We know we've raised in excess of £10,000 already but we've still got some more money to come.'

The Fareham-based T J Group was founded in 1995 with just six staff, and adopted the foundation as its charity in 2006.

It has previously raised £12,000 for a Ford Ranger vehicle and £15,000 for a new IT suite for the charity.

And it has also worked to provide the charity with two greenhouse-style growing tents in Fratton – enlisting the army to help clear a patch of wasteground so the horticultural training centre could be set up.
